Dialysis is the artificial procedure for eliminating waste (diffusion) and unwanted water (ultrafiltration) from the blood. Our kidneys try this naturally. Some people, however, may have failed or damaged kidneys which cannot accomplish the function properly - they may need dialysis.

Basically, dialysis is the artificial replacement unit for lost kidney function (renal replacement therapy).

Dialysis may be used for patients who may have become unwell and have acute renal failure (temporary lack of renal function), or for pretty stable patients that have completely lost kidney function (stage 5 chronic kidney disease).

When we are healthy our kidneys regulate our body numbers of water and minerals, and remove waste material. The kidneys also produce erythropoietin and 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol) included in the endocrine system. Dialysis will not correct the endocrine functions of failed kidneys - it only replaces some kidney functions, such as waste removing and fluid removal.

Dialysis and altitude - A study published in March 2009 found that fatality rates for dialysis patients are 10%-15% lower for those whose homes are higher than 4, 1000 feet, compared to those who live at sea level.

Some countries, including the UK, are predicting a doubling of the amount of patients on dialysis machine.
